چکیده

46 J-FOR Journal of Science & Technology for Forest Products and Processes: VOL.1, NO.1, 2011 The extraction of hemicelluloses from wood chips is crucial for producing value-added biomaterials in a forest biorefinery utilization. The low concentration of dissolved lignocellulosic materials dissolved in pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) presents a big challenge to the overall utilization processes. In this work, activated carbon (AC) was first modified with polydiallyldimethylammonium (P-DADMAC) chloride or chitosan, and then the modified AC was applied for adsorbing lignocellulosic materials from the PHL. The results showed that the amount of P-DADMAC or chitosan adsorbed on the AC played an important role in the adsorption of lignocellulosic materials. If the mass ratio of PHL to AC was low (20/1 or 40/1) in solutions, the polymer-modified AC had a higher adsorption than the unmodified AC for lignocellulosic materials. However, if the weight ratio was high (140/1), the adsorption of lignocellulosic materials was independent of the modification. Additionally, the P-DADMAC or chitosan modification had a negative effect on the adsorption rate of lignocellulosic materials on AC. Recovery of Acetic Acid from Prehydrolysis Liquor of Kraft Hardwood Dissolving Pulp using Ion-exchange Resin

The growing demand for rayon and cellulosic products has resulted in the conversion of a number of kraft pulp mills into dissolving pulp mills in recent years. In fact, kraft-based dissolving pulp production fits well into the concept of an integrated forest biorefinery, in particular, the utilization of dissolved organics in the pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) for bio-materials and bio-energy purp...

The Potential of Pre-Hydrolysis Liquor from the Dissolving Pulp Process as Recovery Source of Xylooligosaccharide - A Mini-Review

Currently, xylooligosaccharides (XOs), which are a kind of nutraceutical that can be produced from lignocellulosic biomass, have an important place in the global market. In this critical review the raw materials and manufacturing methods of XOs are briefly considered. The results in some publications indicate that the pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) from dissolving pulp process is a potential sourc...

Impact of Furfural on the Sugar Analysis of Pre- Hydrolysis Liquor of Kraft-based Dissolving Pulp Production Process Using the Hpaec Technique

High performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulse amperometric detector (HPAEC-PAD) is a reliable method to systematically determine the sugar contents in pulp and paper waste streams, including bleaching and extraction liquors. We used the same method to determine the sugar content of industrially produced pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) from a kraft-based dissolving pulp production proces...

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

A biorefinery scheme to fractionate bamboo into high-grade dissolving pulp and ethanol

BACKGROUND Bamboo is a highly abundant source of biomass which is underutilized despite having a chemical composition and fiber structure similar as wood. The main challenge for the industrial processing of bamboo is the high level of silica, which forms water-insoluble precipitates negetively affecting the process systems. A cost-competitive and eco-friendly scheme for the production of high-p...
